Below are answers to some of the most commonly asked legal questions about Yammer. See our Terms of Use and our Privacy Policy for more details.

Who can see the data?

Only employees with a verified company email address can join and see the data in your company's Yammer network. Our premium packages offer the ability to further control network membership, issue guest passes, and restrict access to specific IP address ranges (e.g. to require a VPN or on-site connection).

Who owns the data?

When you upgrade your network to one of our premium packages, your company owns the data. In free Yammer networks, the users (employees) own their data. Ownership is transferred from employees to the company when the network is upgraded. Yammer does not own or claim the rights to your data at any time.

How do we remove a former employee?

Paid Yammer networks have company admin(s) who can remove former employees at any time using our premium tools. Paid networks can also use Yammer's directory integration feature so that removal of former employees from Yammer will happen automatically. In free Yammer networks, users can be suspended by other users, and must re-verify their email address to un-suspend their account. Former employees are locked once they no longer have access to a valid company email address.

What about data export & e-discovery?

Once you've upgraded your Yammer network to one of our premium packages, your company's Yammer messages can be exported into a standard format (.eml). This allows you to use your existing data-mining tools for e-discovery. Yammer can also provide you with periodic backups of all your Yammer data so you can keep a local copy. Under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act, Yammer cannot be compelled to turn over your content from your Yammer network to any third-party, except for government entities.

What if users post something inappropriate?

Yammer presents no new issues than already exist with email, except that Yammer is easy to monitor (with our premium keyword monitoring tool), and social pressure regulates what is posted and limits conversation to appropriate topics.
